Have you ever noticed how flawless the average Japanese woman’s skin is? Well studies show that the average Japanese woman uses up to seven skincare products per week.
Thus, a little extra time and effort on your skincare goes a LONG way. I’ve spent a long time finessing my skincare routine, because I prefer to have a clear base to put a little bit of make-up on, than to use a lot of make up to cover up a load of blemishes (a cake face of make-up makes me look like a hooker).
The first thing I highly recommend you invest in is the book ‘Homemade Beauty’ by Annie Strole (http://www.amazon.com/Homemade-Beauty-Recipes-All-Natural-Ingredients/dp/0399171029). This little book has 150 recipes for homemade skin serums using ingredients found in your kitchen. Each recipe is for a specific skin problem (blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, detoxing) and there are little tips about the main ingredients and what they are doing for your skin e.g. plain yogurt contains lactic acid which gently exfoliates and hydrates the skin giving it a beautiful glow.
Using the information about products in the book, and my own research online and in stores like The Body Shop, I have compiled a simple, but effective nightly skincare routine:
- Remove make-up using Neutrogena Deep Clean Cream Cleanser. Cream Cleanser’s are good at removing make up for all skin types, because they are gentler than soaps or liquid cleansers. If you are thinking that you already have oily skin and this will just make things worse, oils work to balance natural face oil by helping your skin to stop producing as much.
- Using a cotton pad wipe face and neck with The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Skin Clearing Toner. Tea Tree’s anti-bacterial properties reduce zits and fatty build-ups to overly reduce blemishes on skin.
- (Once a week) Exfoliate lips with Lush’s Mint Julips Lip Scrub, then moisturise with Blistex Lip Conditioner. Make-up lip products dry out the lips very quickly, making it important to exfoliate your lips regularly. This will make them pink and soft, and make sure to seal them with a good lip conditioner (I love Blistex the best).
- Spot treat pimples using CVS Benzoyl Peroxide acne medication. Benzoyl perodixe dramatically dries out excess oil plug pores (pimples), as it is an anti-biotic used to eliminate the bacteria that causes acne. Using it as a spot treatment on problem sites helps to reduce pimples rapidly.
- Add a squirt of Honey to a slice of freshly cut lemon. Rub the lemon flesh over blackhead areas. Honey is a wonderful moisturiser and lemon is anti-bacterial making them the perfect pair to spread over your blackhead areas. This will lead to a decline in blackhead’s overtime.
- Hydrate eye area with Nivea Q10 plus anti-wrinkle eye cream. This product visibly reduces dark circles as well! A Dermatologist once told me to start using anti-ageing products from as young as 19 – to combat the effects of ageing. Of course the best way to reduce wrinkled skin is to stay out of the sun (apply a layer of SPF 15 – 30 sunscreen underneath your make up) and to maintain a healthy diet, but anti-ageing products will also reduce the ageing process.
This is my skin care routine so far, it changes quite a lot as I hear new information about the benefits of different products, and I will be sure to update you if I hear about a wonder product. The best part of my skin care routine is that it can be achieved on a fairly low budget, as I don’t know if it is worth splurging $90 on a bottle of ‘magic skin serum’.
